Cyber crime and it's measures

Before going into the blog, Let me introduce myself to you , I am Jahnavi Mareedu and I am from Andhra Pradesh a state of combination of great history and spiritual mythology and the place where the most critical and awesome language called Telugu is used. I am a student of Amity university Jaipur , trying to give some information on the most essential thing now-a-days  "Cyber Crimes".

CYBER CRIMES

In today's interconnected world, where the internet serves as a gateway to a vast realm of information and opportunities, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. As we immerse ourselves in the digital age, it is crucial to understand the ever-present threat of cybercrime and the measures we can take to safeguard our digital presence. Join us on a journey through the realm of cybersecurity, where we unravel the complexities of cyber threats and explore the tools and practices that can help us navigate the treacherous waters of cyberspace.

WHAT IS CYBER CRIME?

At its core, cybercrime refers to criminal activities carried out through the use of computers or the internet. From data breaches and phishing scams to ransomware attacks and identity theft, cybercriminals employ various tactics to exploit vulnerabilities in digital systems and networks. Understanding the different types of cybercrimes is essential in recognizing and mitigating potential threats.

Types of Cybercrimes:

Cybercrimes can take many forms, including:

Malware Attacks: Malicious software designed to infiltrate and damage computer systems.

Phishing Scams: Deceptive emails or messages aimed at tricking individuals into revealing sensitive information.

Ransomware: Software that encrypts data and demands payment for its release.

Identity Theft: Stealing personal information to impersonate individuals for fraudulent activities.

Who are The Cybercriminals?

Cybercriminals are individuals or groups who leverage their technological skills to engage in malicious and illegal activities known as cybercrimes. Operating primarily within the clandestine realm of the Dark Web, they offer illicit services and products, ranging from identity theft to the sale of compromised data. While hacking itself is not inherently criminal and can be used for ethical purposes by white hat hackers to uncover vulnerabilities, it becomes cybercrime when employed with malicious intent. Notably, cybercrime isn't limited to hacking; it encompasses a diverse range of illegal online activities, including scams, cyberstalking, and facilitating illicit transactions.

Here are some examples of cybercriminals:

- Black hat hackers
- Cyberstalkers
- Cyber terrorists
- Scammers

Why Cybercrimes Increasing?

The world is constantly developing new technologies, so now, it has a big reliance on technology. Most smart devices are connected to the internet.  There are benefits and there are also risks. One of the risks is the big rise in the number of cybercrimes committed, there are not enough security measures and operations to help protect these technologies.Computer networks allow people in cyberspace to reach any connected part of the world in seconds. Cybercrimes can have different laws and regulations from one country to another, mentioning also that covering tracks is much easier when committing a cybercrime rather than real crimes.

We are listing different below reasons for the big increase in cybercrimes:

Vulnerable devices:
As we mentioned before, the lack of efficient security measures and solutions introduces a wide range of vulnerable devices which is an easy target for cybercriminals.

Personal motivation:
Cybercriminals sometimes commit cybercrimes as a kind of revenge against someone they hate or have any problem with.

Financial motivation:
The most common motivation of cybercriminals and hacker groups, most attacks nowadays are committed to profit from it.

Exapmle of CyberCrime:

Stuxnet

The Stuxnet incident is a famous incident that happened in 2010. Stuxnet is the name of a computer worm (type of malware) that targets SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems.

Stuxnet malware left devastating damage to Iran’s nuclear power program. It was spreading through USB drives and affected mainly Microsoft Windows operating systems.

The malware functionality was to search for machines that are working as PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and if it was found the malware updates its code over the internet through the attackers.

Protective Measures Against Cybercrime:

There are many tips and guidelines to protect yourself and your environment from the risk of cybercrimes such as:

1. Use a Total Anti-Virus Protection
Use good anti-virus security to protect against malware including ransomware and viruses.

2.Passwords
Always use a strong password and ensure you don’t repeat your password on multiple websites.

3. Keep Your Software Updated
Updated software is highly important for the operating system and internet security software. Cybercriminals always try to exploit defects in the software to get access to your system.

4. Social Media Settings
All personal information on social media platforms should be kept locked. Apart from this, less the information is shared publicly, the better it would be.

5. Protect Your Identity
Identify theft occurs in situations where you will be prompted to give your personal information over the internet. A VPN can also help you to protect the data you send and receive online.

6. Keep up to Date on Major Security Breaches
If you are doing business through a website that has been impacted by a security breach, find out what information hackers accessed and accordingly change your password immediately.

7. Educate & Monitor Kids
Teach your kids about the acceptable use of the internet without blocking them from using the internet. They should be aware of any kind of illegal activity happens like online harassment, stalking or bullying. Similarly, be careful while sharing your child’s personal information as identity thieves often target children.

8. Understand What to Do If You Become a Victim
If in any circumstance, you believe that you have become a victim of cybercrime, then the first thing to do is to inform the local police. Similarly, if you believe that criminals have stolen your identity, then alert the companies and banks where the fraud occurred and place fraud alerts and get your credit reports.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, cybercrime poses an ever-present threat in our interconnected digital world. From phishing scams to sophisticated malware attacks, cybercriminals continuously adapt to exploit vulnerabilities and target both individuals and organizations. However, armed with knowledge and awareness, we can fortify our digital defenses and navigate the online landscape with greater confidence.

By implementing best practices such as using strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and staying cautious of suspicious emails and links, we can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to cyber threats. Regular software updates, data backups, and security audits are essential to maintaining a robust cybersecurity posture.

Moreover, fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness through education and training empowers individuals and employees to recognize and respond effectively to potential threats.
